New The 1% remittance tax, explained

Nobody hands you a manual when you arrive in America

So we wrote one. Paperwork, credit, rent applications and tax forms — in plain English, with real 2026 numbers, for people doing all of it for the first time.

Where to begin

Three things decide your first year

Your documents, your credit file, and a roof you can actually get approved for. Everything else gets easier once those three are handled.

Why we exist

Most of what you find online is written to sell you something

Search “how to build credit” and you get a credit-card comparison page. Search “send money to India” and you get a referral link. Search “immigration process” and you get a law firm's landing page.

Fori is a publisher, not a broker. We do not sell leads, we do not take commissions on the products we mention, and we do not have an affiliate account with a single bank or transfer service. The only money on this site comes from advertising, which is clearly labelled and never influences what we write. That means when a guide says this option is usually worse, nothing is stopping us from saying it.

We also write for the specific situation almost nobody covers: you have no US credit file, no US rental history, no US employer reference, and often no relatives here to ask. Advice written for someone born in Ohio does not survive contact with that reality.

Who this is for

If any of these is you, you are in the right place

  • You just landed on a work, study or family visa and have a folder of documents you do not understand yet.
  • You have been here a year or two and keep hitting the same wall: “we need to see US credit history.”
  • You send money home every month and suspect you are being quietly overcharged. You are.
  • You are helping someone else — a parent, a spouse, a sibling who is about to arrive.
